Project Description
A new Kitchen has been added to the rear of the existing Californian Bungalow to allow the existing rear living space room to be a comfortable Dining room. The bathroom has been moved out to allow views directly through to the rear garden from the front door. A new living space has been added to the west side of the house to allow the existing front room to be an isolated study/quiet space.
The rear addition has been vertically extended to seek direct sun over the existing roof.
The living room addition shields the space from the adjacent overlooking neighbours while allowing the occupants to feel as if in the garden with an uninterrupted panoramic view from the front garden around to the rear garden.
Environmental Initiatives:
- passive solar design using large windows to the north adjacent to thermal mass in floor slab, new blockwork walls and existing brick walls
- high level of slab, wall and roof insulation
- double-glazed, timber-framed windows
- clerestorey windows to maximise access to sunlight into late in the day to decrease the use of artificial lighting
- solar hot water
- hydronic heating with gas boost
- rainwater tanks
- radially sawn timber cladding from sustainable forests
