Project Description
This project consists of an addition to an existing 1930’s Californian bungalow residence of a new living space, laundry and renovated kitchen on the ground floor; and a new main bedroom, ensuite and deck to a new upper level. The design was developed in response to the existing bungalow’s nature of heavy external walls with small windows, allowing little connection to the garden. The new spaces extend out into the rear garden and the definition between the house and garden is blurred.
Environmental Initiatives:
- passive solar design orienting windows for solar heat gain at different times of day
- double-glazed, timber-framed windows
- pelmets integrated into internal linings
- plywood joinery
- high level of wall and roof insulation
- hydronic heating to new and existing spaces
- solar hot water heating with natural gas boost
- water tank collecting rain water for use on garden
- re-use of materials from demolition including timber weatherboards, timber flooring, bricks and roof tiles
- eco-friendly paints used internally with low voc’s
